While some might prefer a day trip or to stay in a hotel, many people find that camping is a great addition to their vacation. There are many campgrounds near Roanoke, Virginia that offer a range of experiences. Some are extremely minimal while others offer plenty of amenities for the modern camper. Check out the campgrounds below to find the perfect choice for you and your family.

Dixie Caverns

The Dixie Caverns camp ground welcomes RV, camper, and tent camping. All sites are equipped with access for water, electricity, cable TV, and sewer. Free Wi-Fi internet is also available. The campground is open year round. Reservations are suggested during busy events such as football or race weekends. Cavern tours are available from 9:30 AM to 5:00 PM seven days a week. Pets are not permitted in the caverns.

Alta Mons Camping

The campground at Smith Mountain Lake State Park puts you close to all the wonderful activities this state park has to offer. There is a bath house with hot showers and a wash sink for dishes. The campground offers multiple types of sites, including:

  • Standard tent sites with no water or power hook up
  • 30-foot sites for tents, campers, or RVs with water and power hook up
  • 50-foot pull through sites for RVs only with water and power hook up

Campsite fees range from $20-30 per night for Virginia residents and $24-35 per night for non-residents.

Reservations are strongly recommended and can be made through the Virginia state park website or by phone.

Located just five miles from Natural Bridge, Camp Jellystone offers an impressive array of amenities for the whole family. This campground is a great choice for those looking for more than just a spot to park the camper. A waterslide, paddleboat rental, basketball court, and mini-golf are just a few of the activities offered.

The campground boasts 220 sites with a range of amenities from primitive tent sites to full water, electric, and sewer hook up. General amenities include a snack bar and general store, modern bath houses with ADA compliant facilities, a laundry room, and free Wi-Fi.

The campground is open from March 18 to November 15 each year. Campsite rates range from $39-84 per night. Reservations are suggested and can be made online or by phone.

Peaks of Otter Campground

The Peaks of Otter Campground is run by the National Park Service. It is open May 26 through October 28. This is a primitive campground, and no showers, electric or water hookups are available. 66 sites are available for advance reservation, while 73 sites are available on a first come, first served basis. Sites are $20 per night.

Chantilly Farm Campground

Chantilly Farm is a festival and event venue in addition to a campground, so you may find it a good choice if you will be visiting any of the events happening there. The campground offers RV sites with full water, electric, and sewer hookups as well as primitive sites with no hookups for both RVs and tents.

The campground has two bath houses with accessible facilities. Free Wi-Fi is available on site. The camp office offers a small selection of merchandise and RV supplies.

Prices range from $15-30 per night. Reservations are suggested, and full payment is due at the time of booking.

Salthouse Branch Campground

Gala Riverfront Campground

The primitive campsites include a fire ring, picnic table, parking area, and level tent pad. It is unclear if the sites can accommodate campers or RVs. Portable toilets are available on site, but campers must bring their own drinking water, as there is none available at the campground.

Campsites are $36 per night. Reservations are required and can be booked through the website or by phone.

Claytor Lake State Park

Bath houses with accessible facilities are available.

The campground is open from the first Friday in March to the first Monday in December. Prices are $20-30 per night for Virginia residents and $24-35 for non-residents. Reservations at least one day in advance are required and can be booked online or by phone.
