Practicing mainly workers’ compensation law, Jamie Karek has been working with Geoff McDonald & Associates for more than three years. As a former union member herself and the first in her family to go to college, she has seen first-hand the relationship between employer and employee and is dedicated to improving the Virginia system and protecting the rights of local workers.
Although she began studying biology and then later studied psychology, Jamie puts her knowledge and experience in these seemingly unrelated fields to work in employment law. The Virginia workers’ compensation system can be biased toward employers, and she is committed to using all of her skills to effect change and get people the compensation they deserve.
Just Ask Jamie:
Q: Can I get money for pain and suffering in a workers’ compensation case.
A: In Virginia, workers’ compensation cases are No-Fault, so you cannot file for pain and suffering. “No-Fault” means that negligence is not taken into account in the claim. That’s the main difference between personal injury and work injury cases—workers’ compensation laws are put into place with the hope of speeding money to injured workers who need it and saving all parties involved the hassle of going to court.
After graduating from Canisius College in Buffalo, New York, Jamie earned a Master’s degree in cognitive psychology at State University of New York at Buffalo. She earned her Juris Doctorate from the University of Richmond’s T.C. Williams School of Law in Richmond, Virginia. While there, she worked on the Richmond Journal of Law and the Public Interest and was honored with the Virginia AFL-CIO Workers’ Rights Scholarship as well as the Public Interest Law Association Pro Bono Award. She also served as Fundraising Chair for Phi Alpha Delta.
Jamie gives educational presentations to labor unions throughout the state on topics of workers’ compensation and the Family Medical Leave Act. She has also provided assistance to Central Virginia Legal Aid. She is a member of Phi Alpha Delta, the Virginia Trial Lawyers Association, the Metro Richmond Women’s Bar Association, and the American Bar Association. She is active in charities including Meals on Wheels and CARE animal rescue.
