On August 8, 2008, the members of Geoff McDonald & Associates joined forces with Operation Paintbrush and the United Way of Greater Richmond and Petersburg to paint a house for an elderly couple in Glen Allen, Virginia.
“The members of the firm are incredibly satisfied with the service they performed,” said attorney Geoff McDonald. “Everyone was involved with painting, and more than anything, they were willing to do whatever they could for the homeowners. We worked together as a team, and that really showed through our service.”
For the entire afternoon, 18 members of the firm along with Justin Doyle of Operation Paintbrush and C.B. Sinclair, AFL-CIO Community Services Liaison & Director of Labor Participation helped paint the house in addition to cutting tree branches, pulling weeds, and mulching garden areas in the lawn. Additionally six local union members—Jim Underwood, President of local union IBEW 666; Toney Rigali, President of the Building Trades Union; and Jeff Agee and Marie Marshall, both from Machinist's Union—lent helping hands during the service project.
“The residents of the home were extremely grateful,” explained Jennifer Velazquez, executive administrative assistant at Geoff McDonald & Associates. “They couldn't stop thanking everyone for taking time to help them. The owner of the home was overwhelmed and began to cry, and once we were finished, she insisted on giving everyone a hug and that's exactly what she did! It was a touching moment because she says it's difficult for her and her husband to do anything outside. She called us ‘angels.’”
The members of the firm are planning to host another community initiative, such a food drive, to help those in need during the upcoming holidays.
Operation Paintbrush is a program whereby volunteer groups paint the homes of needy Henrico County citizens. These are citizens without adequate resources or family help whose homes need painting and would only further deteriorate without assistance. Throughout the past six years, volunteers from Henrico County's churches, businesses, civic organizations, clubs, and government agencies have painted 83 homes and provided more than 14,000 hours of work.
