Justin Sheldon has been trying cases in Virginia courts since 2011. He began his legal career defending companies in multi-million dollar and highly complex cases. He joined the Litigation Department at Geoff McDonald & Associates in 2015, exclusively dedicating his practice to representing clients that have been seriously injured by defective products, in car crashes, and in many other situations where someone else has caused them harm. His experience as a defense attorney gives him special insight into the complexities of injury cases, and the strategies used by defendants.
“This is the kind of law I always wanted to practice. People who are injured need to spend their time and energy getting well and repairing their bodies, not fighting bureaucracies.” An Air Force brat, Justin considers Roanoke, Virginia his hometown. He chose to attend college close to home so that he could be part of his little sister’s life growing up. “My sister is 18 years younger than me and I didn’t want to be that mysterious older brother who only came home on holidays. She is one of my best friends and I wouldn’t change that decision for the world.” He received his Bachelor of Arts degree in Spanish from Roanoke College in Salem, Virginia and speaks Spanish fluently.
In 2011, Justin earned his law degree from the University of Richmond School of Law. He graduated cum laude and served as Articles Editor for the University of Richmond Law Review. He started his legal career as an associate at LeClairRyan, one of Richmond’s largest firms, representing businesses, consumer reporting agencies, and hospitals. He was later recruited by Spencer, LLP and became part of their national automotive products liability litigation trial team where he defended the world’s largest car companies in their high-exposure lawsuits. “Those experiences gave me unique insights into how defense cases are argued. Now, that helps me craft effective cases for plaintiffs taking on large insurance corporations.”
Virginia Super Lawyers named Justin a “2015 Rising Star” in products liability defense field. Now, he is on the other side, fighting for just compensation for injured people. In 2016, Justin’s first year in compensating injured people in personal injury cases, Virginia Super Lawyers named Justin a “2016 Rising Star” in Personal Injury Law.
In his spare time, Justin and his wife, Laura, are teaching themselves all kinds of different skills as they renovate their home, and in December 2016 their family grew with the addition of their first child, a son. Justin is also on the planning committee for the annual Rule of Law, Students’ Day at the Capitol, which is an event that brings middle- and high-school students to the Virginia State Capitol to learn about the law directly from lawmakers. For his work with this program, the Virginia State Bar honored Justin with a Significant Service award in 2013 and again in 2016. In 2016 Justin recovered more than $2,700,000 for his clients.
