The manufacturer of a folding bicycle—Bike Friday—has issued a voluntary recall through the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) of roughly 3,800 bicycles after receiving several reports of riders being injured. WDEF 12 News says the bicycles were sold from January 2007 through September 2012 through the Internet and dealerships nationwide.
Reports show the Tikit brand folding bicycle has a handlebar stem that is prone to breakage. When the piece breaks, riders could potentially lose control of the bike, which has led to injuries in some cases. The company has received six reports of the bikes having broken handlebar stems, with two of those incidents being severe enough to require treatment for both lacerations and head injuries at a local hospital, has led to the company’s concern over product liability.
Anyone in possession of one of the defective bicycles should stop riding it immediately and schedule a free repair by contacting the manufacturer or dealership where the bicycle was purchased. Bike Friday can be contacted by calling 1-800-777-0258 from 8:00 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Pacific Time Monday through Friday.
