Geoff McDonald & Associates can help you with head injury cases.

Head injuries can happen on any job at any time due to slip and falls, vehicle accidents, falling objects and more.  Of all the types of injuries that can occur on the job, head injuries are possibly the most dangerous and can lead to traumatic brain injuries, concussions, hematomas, contusions and more.

  • Traumatic Brain Injury.  A traumatic brain injury (TBI), also known as an intracranial injury, occurs when an external force traumatically injures the brain.  It can become a life changing event – in a split second – and can result in paralysis, permanent disability and even death.

TBI can cause a host of physical, cognitive and behavioral issues and result in side effects including severe and continual headaches, dizziness, seizures, speech and reasoning difficulties, personality changes and emotional instability.  TBI victims may require physical therapy, speech therapy, recreation therapy, occupational therapy and vision therapy – for weeks, months and perhaps years.

  • Concussion. A concussion is the most common type of head injury.  It occurs from a blow to the head, causing the brain to collide with the inside of the skull and damage brain tissue.  Concussions can result in headaches, feeling as though you are in a “fog,” emotional instability, loss of consciousness or amnesia, problems sleeping, irritability and slowed reaction times.  Although symptoms generally resolve within three weeks, it can often take longer and has the potential for resulting in long-lasting complications.
  • Hematoma.  A hematoma is a localized pooling of blood which occurs between the brain and the skull – generally referred to as subdural or epidural depending upon where it occurs – and is usually caused by a blow to the head.  Hematomas can result in bruises and cause side effects such as headaches, numbness, dizziness, disorientation, speech difficulties and more.  Hematomas can range from slight to serious as they can expand and compress brain tissue and can result in permanent injury and even death.
  • Contusion.  A contusion is generally known as a bruise which results in what many refer to as a “black and blue” mark.  While most head contusions are minor, some can be severe. They may interrupt the neurological functions of the brain and lead to life-threatening complications such as hematomas, concussions and traumatic brain injuries – especially when not addressed quickly.

Anyone who has suffered a head injury – regardless of its perceived severity – should be examined by a medical professional immediately.

The Very Real Costs Of A Head Injury

Unlike other types of injuries, the long term effects of head injuries generally cannot be determined right away.  However, it’s safe to say that most head injury victims will likely incur substantial medical bills, continued medical monitoring costs and the need for specialists depending upon the circumstances of the injury.  The injury may also result in the inability to work short term, long term or perhaps even permanently.  It can put an enormous financial strain on your family to pay your bills and make ends meet.  Getting the compensation you need after sustaining a head injury is important for you and your family – especially when you don’t know what the future may hold.  That’s where Geoff McDonald & Associates can help.
