Workers’ Compensation Claimants’ Paralegal

Geoff McDonald & Associates is looking for an experienced claimants-side Workers’ Compensation Attorney (10 years) to help Virginia workers who are injured on the job recover compensation for their injuries, including medical bills and lost wages. Typical job functions of our paralegals include:

  • Reviewing medical evidence and medical records; talking to medical providers
  • Preparing for depositions of the claimant, physicians, medical experts and other parties
  • Preparing discovery
  • Performing legal research
  • Thoroughly understanding WC law in VA and knowledge of the Commission processes
  • Assisting attorneys in drafting pleadings, findings of fact, motions, briefs, opinions and other legal documents
  • Helping attorneys to prepare for litigating cases before a workers’ compensation judge
  • Answering client questions and guiding them through the process
  • Completing paperwork relating to the claim
  • Providing support and encouragement to the claimant

Skills and Knowledge

A successful candidate will have:

  • 10 years of VA WC specific experience
  • Thorough knowledge of Virginia WC procedures
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills
  • Good research and analytical skills (Lexus)
  • Ability to handle large caseloads and juggle multiple priorities and deadlines
  • Ability to work independently and in a team
  • Computer proficiency
  • General understanding of medical, scientific, construction, products, engineering and similar issues inherent in workers compensation cases
  • Compassion and understanding of injured worker’s plight
  • Associates degree or higher preferred
  • Spanish a plus but not required
