Should I talk to the insurance company after a car accident?

Drivers who cause collisions sometimes ask not to report the accident to the insurance company, and promise to personally pay the losses. You should not do this because it could turn out your injuries and damages are worse than you expected or that the driver can’t or won’t pay as promised.

If you fail to report the crash to your own insurer, you may end up ineligible for uninsured motorist coverage or other benefits.

When you speak to any insurance company, you should keep in mind that they are often looking for reasons not to pay claims or to pay as little as possible. It is best to let a lawyer handle communications with the insurer so you do not inadvertently jeopardize your right to full compensation.

Do not make a written or recorded statement about the accident to an insurance company without the advice of a lawyer. Also, don’t sign any papers the insurance companies send you without showing it to your lawyer first.
