Virginia Corn Recall

Virginia is among the states listed in a recent recall of frozen corn from Bonduelle USA. The Brockport, New York company has recalled over 9,000 cases of frozen cut corn from New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Vermont, Massachusetts, Indiana, Ohio, Kentucky, Maryland, Virginia, North Carolina, Florida, Mississippi, and Louisiana.

The product was recalled due to concerns that it could be contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes, bacteria capable of causing serious and possibly fatal infections. According to the FDA, the recall applies to the following labels and codes:

• WYLWOOD Super Sweet Whole Kernel Corn, NET WT. 16 OZ (1 LB), UPC 051933002401, Codes: Best By June 2017 K51564 and K51574;
• MARKET BASKET Cut Corn, NET WT. 16 OZ. (1 LB.), UPC 049705693414, Code: Best By June 2017 K51574;
• Bountiful Harvest WHOLE KERNEL CUT CORN, NET WT. 40 OZ. (2.5 LBS.), UPC 822486120597, Code: Best By June 2017 K51574;
• WEST CREEK FROZEN VEGETABLES Cut Corn, NET WT. 2.5 LBS., UPC 00806795285239 Code: Best By June 2017 K51574.

The recall was announced on Monday after samples of the product were tested in Tennessee and found positive for Listeria monocytogenes. At this time no complaints have been filed, and no illnesses have been reported in association with the product.

Consumers are advised not to eat this product and to throw it away if they have purchased it. Find more information on this recall in the press release from the FDA.

The recall from Bonduelle USA is the latest in a series of recalls due to Listeria contamination in recent months. In June, Springfield, Virginia company Good Seed, Inc. recalled soy bean sprouts and mung bean sprouts due to potential contamination.

This spring Blue Bell Creameries was forced to recall all of their products and suspend production at their plant in Oklahoma after an outbreak of listeriosis that resulted in 10 hospitalizations and 3 deaths. The ice cream manufacturer’s products have been absent from grocery freezer sections for months. Just this week Blue Bell returned to the shelves of some Texas and Alabama retailers but has yet to make its way to other states.

Listeriosis is an infection caused by Listeria monocytogenes bacteria. This infection is most likely to affect adults over 65, pregnant women and newborns, and people with weakened immune systems.

The symptoms of listeriosis include fever and muscle aches, possibly preceded by gastrointestinal symptoms. These symptoms can develop at any time within two months of eating contaminated food.

Listeriosis is treated with antibiotics. It is a very serious infection, and it’s important to see a doctor immediately if you believe you may be at risk.
