Geoff McDonald, the principal with Geoff McDonald & Associates, a Richmond personal injury law firm, will kick off the fourth season of the Brian Derby Offensive Lineman Football Camp (Derby Camp) held each July at 12829 River Road on the football field of Benedictine College Preparatory in Richmond.
McDonald, a former lineman with the University of Hawaii and University of Virginia, volunteers
his time each summer as camp director and coach, raises money and dedicates personal funds
in conducting the annual summer football camp which develops offensive linemen.
“We host this summer camp each year to encourage young players to maximize their potential on and off the football field. Our primary goal is to teach kids how to love the game and enjoy their experience as a football player and an athlete. The skills we teach will be adapted by our players in achieving other life goals, both on and off the field,” explained McDonald.
This summer McDonald joins fellow coaches Brian Derby, Sampson Kela and Shane Cazamero,
all who played high school or college football in Hawaii. New coaches joining the Derby Camp are youth football coach, Mike Cummings and current head coach of St. Christopher’s School
in Richmond, Lance Clelland.
The 35-year friendship between McDonald and Derby began when they played against each other during their high school years in Honolulu, said McDonald. “Brian and I played on the All-Star Team and were recruited to play offensive linemen for the University of Hawaii. We were scholarship players and roommates during our first two years and then junior year I transferred to the University of Virginia and switched to defensive line.”
The coaches will share their athletic experience and skills in coaching student athletes ranging in age from 8 to 18 years who aspire to play offensive linemen on their school or college teams.
According to McDonald, several former Derby Campers have joined major D-1 Conferences and the NFL and Derby Campers were recognized as the top three linemen at a recent Nike lineman camp in California. This summer McDonald and his coaches welcome the return of former 2015 Richmond Derby Campers of the Year, Noah Hartsoe and Jack Cornett.
