Where Are Richmond’s Worst Intersections?

Jun 17, 2013 | Auto Accidents

The Richmond Police and Richmond Department of Public Works are launching a campaign to reduce car crashes and injuries at the city’s most dangerous intersections.

There were 124 crashes at Richmond’s 10 worst intersections in 2012, The Richmond Times-Dispatch reports. Six of the bad intersections are along the I-95/I-64 corridor.

Richmond’s worst intersections for traffic crashes, and the number of wrecks reported in 2012 are:

  1. Hull Street Road and Elkhardt Road, 16 auto wrecks
  2. Belvedere Street and Leigh Streets, 15
  3. Cowardin Avenue and Semmes Avenue, 15
  4. Bainbridge Street and Cowardin Avenue, 14
  5. Forest Hill Avenue and Chippenham Parkway, 14
  6. Hull Street and Commerce Road, 14
  7. Board Rock Boulevard and Warwick Road, 13
  8. Harrison Street and Broad Street, 13
  9. Cary Street and Boulevard, 13
  10. 18th Street and Main Street, 11

The intersection of Hull Street Road and Old Hundred Road is the worst in Chesterfield County, with 61 accidents in 2012.

The Department of Public Works has a grant to install new traffic signals, pedestrian signs and other measures to get the most dangerous intersections under control.

Traffic engineering operations manager Travis A. Bridewell said the goal is to reduce the number and severity of crashes and decrease the potential for accidents. It is clear that more needs to be done to make these intersections safer.
