Types of Ankle and Foot Injuries

If your ankle or foot injury happened at work or because of your job duties, you may be able to make a Virginia workers’ compensation claim. If your injuries were due to someone else’s negligence, carelessness or improper actions, you may have a right to file a personal injury claim.

There are many kinds of ankle and foot injuries that can happen on the job or in other types of accidents. Some of the most common injuries include:

  • Bone fractures – The fibula, tibia and talus join at the ankle and are commonly broken in falls and car accidents. The feet and toes also have many bones that can be broken.
  • Tendonitis – If the tendons around the ankle joint are irritated, they can become inflamed, causing significant pain and mobility limitations.
  • Amputation – If a foot is crushed or severely injured, it may need to be amputated due to cell death caused by loss of blood flow. An accident could also cause an unplanned amputation of the foot if it is severed in a car accident or caught in a machine.
  • Foot punctures – Sharp objects can puncture the soles of the feet.
  • Sprains – Around 25,000 people in the U.S. sprain their ankles daily. A sprain occurs when the ligaments in the ankle or foot become torn. Sprains are often painful, but rest, ice and painkillers are usually sufficient to relieve the pain and allow the foot to get better over time. In some cases, surgery is necessary if the ligaments are torn and/or if the sprain does not heal on its own.

Responsibility for Accidents That Injure Feet and Ankles

If you injured your ankle or foot and you believe someone else was responsible for your accident, you should speak with both a doctor and a lawyer. A doctor can diagnose your condition, keep records of your injuries, recommend and perform treatments and protect your health. A lawyer will protect your legal rights.

You may be entitled to compensation for all losses that your foot or ankle injury caused. This may include medical bills, lost wages, pain and suffering and more. You may be entitled to make a personal injury claim to recover this type of compensation if a person or a company’s negligence caused your injury.

For example, you may be able to sue for a foot or ankle injury if:

  • A product or machine malfunctioned. The product manufacturer may be held strictly liable for the foot or ankle injury caused by the product defect, meaning you could recover compensation regardless of negligence.
  • A car accident caused the injury. If another driver broke safety rules or was careless and your foot or ankle was injured in a resulting accident, you may sue that motorist.
  • A slip-and-fall accident was the cause. Falls are especially common causes of sprained ankles and other foot and ankle injuries. Property owners have a duty to protect visitors from falls caused by unsafe conditions.

Personal injury claims may be resolved out of court if a settlement is reached, or you could follow through with a lawsuit and a judge or jury would determine if you are entitled to damages.

If your injury occurred at work, you are likely entitled to file a workers’ compensation claim – even if your employer did nothing wrong or even if you were at fault.
